The lower the thermostat the  less fuel you use and the more money you save. The fuel savings are also gained because the temperature by the ceilings is cooler than the temperature by the floor. Cooler temperatures by the ceiling equals less heat escaping to the outside through infiltration which further reduces heat used and increases your fuel savings.
